Recruiting Board Director: Treasurer (Volunteer Position)

The Canadian Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA Canada) is currently recruiting a Director for our board to fill the Treasurer role. Our mission is to develop the leadership capacity of all people to contribute to positive social change.

Duties of the Treasurer:

  • Provides financial advice to the Board.
  • Monitor the financial situation of the organization in close consultation with staff responsible for the financial management of ICA Canada.
  • Interpret financial statements for the Board.
  • Ensure that royalties are paid in accordance with the organization’s policies.
  • Ensure that reserve funds are properly held and invested in accordance with established policies and charitable regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a co-signer of cheques and other disbursement of funds.

Please note: Most approvals of all disbursements and other financial-related tasks are currently being executed virtually.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable experience with good financial management and reporting and compliance practices for charities.
  • Knowledge of financial risk management and the ability to help the organization make informed decisions regarding financial risks.
  • A professional accounting designation is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Prior experience serving on a nonprofit board, ideally in a financial capacity, can be a valuable asset.

Roles and Responsibilities of all Board of Directors 

The primary role of the Board is to frame and sustain the focus of the Institute within the resources available to the Institute.

1. Frame and Sustain Focus Role: 

  • Provide leadership in the ongoing development of a vision for ICA Canada
  • Develop /articulate policies, plans and priorities.
  • Provide governance to /of the Institute and its activities.
  • On behalf of ICA as a non-profit corporation, be accountable to the government regulators, supporters, members and the community at large for legal compliance, ethical behaviour and stewardship.
  • Build relationships that are of mutual benefit to ICA Canada, its members, ICA Associates Inc., ICA International and other organizations which share the values and have similar directions.
  • Develops a succession plan for Board and Staff.

2. Resource Development and Oversight Role: 

  • Approve and monitor a balanced budget.
  • Develop a strategy for the financial sustainability of the organization.
  • Provide contacts that will further the organization’s mission, among our personal and business and institutional connections, including attending networking/learning events.

3. Expectations:  

  • Will commit to attendance and participation in 75% of Board meetings which are all currently being held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In-person meetings will only resume once it has been deemed safe to convene at our office.
  • Frequency of meetings: Regular board meetings are held 6 times a year (January, March, May, July, September, November). Board members are also expected to attend the AGM in June.
  • Will serve on at least one task force/committee.
  • Will serve for (at least) one three-year term.
